7-31-24 & 8-6-24 UW Health Professions Shadowing Program (HPSP) Collaborations with UW CIPE

The Health Professions Shadowing Program (HPSP) is a two-week professional development program for UW–Madison students interested in healthcare careers and is designed to help increase access, equity, and diversity in healthcare careers. This program is jointly administered by the UW–Madison Center for Pre-Health Advising (CPHA) and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) Office of Admissions.

On Wednesday, July 31, 2024, UW CIPE presented to 15 students in the HPSP, as well as Dua Ci Khang, Director, Health Professions Shadowing Program, and HPSP advisors supporting the program though the Center for Pre-Health Advising (CPHA). During the interactive workshop, students were pushed to think about, and learn about, the importance of health professionals working together as a team to achieve the Quintuple Aim: better health, better care, better value, better work experience, and better health equity. This workshop also served as an introduction to UW CIPE as the students involved aspire to enter a health professional program at UW–Madison; at which time they will be learning with, from, and about fellow health professional students through numerous IPE offerings through the UW CIPE.  Students also utilized the information learned during this session during a later session on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, in the UW SMPH Clinical Teaching and Assessment Center (CTAC).

New for Summer 2024, HPSP developed an opportunity for HPSP students to visit the CTAC and experience an IPE Case Simulation with a Standardized Patient (SP).  To help develop this IPE Case Simulation and specifically bring insight to the IPE Case, UW CIPE was invited to collaborate.  During this process, UW CIPE met with Dua Ci Khang, Director, Health Professions Shadowing Program; Yer Lee, Pathways Programs Manager, UW SMPH; and Jenna Patenaude, MA, Director, Clinical Teaching and Assessment Center/Standardized Patient Program.  A case with a patient with a history of COPD being discharged from the hospital was shared to start the development of this IPE case.  To leverage specific professional knowledge and bring an IPE perspective, Jaime Goldberg, PhD, MSW, LCSW, Clinical Assistant Professor, UW School of Social Work and Sheida Pourdashti, a UW SMPH Medical student and advisor for the HPSP program, developed a script for the case to follow.  The final case that was developed involved the discharge of patient with a history of COPD with a physician and social worker working together to meet with this patient in preparation for discharge.  Also, as part of the IPE Case Simulation, a debrief was built in so that students observing could interact with the SP similarly to how health profession students would in a learning case simulation.

This session took place on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, in the CTAC.  For this session students learned from Jenna Patenaude about CTAC and the work they do with health professional students on campus and provided tours of the CTAC.  Medical students Yusuf Rashid Mohamoud and Sheida Pourdashti led interactive demonstrations of basic clinical skills using SP’s with groups of 3-4 students, where students took blood pressures and listened to heart and lung sounds.  For the Interprofessional Case Simulation, groups of 3-4 students were paired with an SP, a person in a physician role (with medical students Greta Olson and Tyler Vang serving in these roles), and a person in a social worker role (with HPSP advisors Indri Maulidar and Brenden Kahil Davis serving in these roles).  To wrap up this session, Sheida and Jaime led a large group debrief to summarize learning from the IPE Case Simulation, the students’ overall experience in the CTAC, and also the importance of Interprofessional Practice and Education.  UW CIPE Staff, Roberta Rusch and Kaitlyn Hawley, along with HPSP Staff Dua Ci Khang; Molly Reinhard, Director, Pre-Professional Advising, Centers for Pre-Health & Pre-Law Advising; and Yer Lee, Pathways Programs Manager, UW SMPH were also in attendance to facilitate learning and support this session.

UW CIPE was privileged to again partner with the HPSP on presenting, as well as being involved in the development of the CTAC IPE Case Simulation. We look forward to continuing this partnership.  In addition, we enjoyed getting a chance to meet with this dynamic group of Pre-Health students and wish them well in their educational journey.
