Message from the UW CIPE Director
Dear University of Madison Community,
I have the great honor of serving as the new Director of the Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (CIPE) at UW-Madison. I am extremely excited and look forward to leading the already successful CIPE through the critical next steps of updating our strategic vision and directions. My base will be in Signe Skott Cooper Hall, 3rd floor, office 3149; I hope you will stop in to say hello!
My career has involved deliberate roles in leading interprofessional teams within healthcare, community, and academic settings. I am grateful for the diverse experiences that have developed my expertise in interprofessional practice and education. While my hands-on experiences, formal education, and professional training have aided along the way, I additionally bring with me many important learnings from successes, failures, and trial and error of implementing interprofessional education and practice in a variety of settings. I have a spirit and love for innovation and highly respect a culture that supports it.
My vision for the UW-Madison CIPE is based on several principles that I will ‘lay on the table’ in a very collaborative journey toward creating new strategic directions and a CIPE vision reflective of our diverse UW-Madison community. The vision will be influenced by the input of internal and external stakeholders including students, faculty, staff, academic and university leadership, and workforce partners. It will be guided by local and statewide community and population health needs. Our vision will drive the full potential for UW-Madison to be the national leader of interprofessional education and practice.
UW-Madison’s CIPE foundation is poised to deliver premiere interprofessional education to our university students; experiences that will effectively prepare students with competencies for interprofessional collaborative practice, including values and ethics, roles and responsibilities, communication, and teams and teamwork. A strategically developed continuum of learning experiences is necessary to continue to build health and non-health professionals’ knowledge, skills, and abilities in interprofessional collaborative practice. When we deliver education to fully prepare students to enter the complex and diverse workforce that exists today, we will be preparing a legion of highly skilled professionals ready to improve patient and population health outcomes. This continuum of education includes the classroom and didactic setting, simulation, experiential learning, and clinical, practicum, and field experiences. With the strong foundation of interprofessional education at UW-Madison, I have no doubt we can become the national leader in the delivery of an innovative interprofessional education and practice continuum learning model. I am eager to collaboratively build our vision, strategic directions, and action plan with the UW-Madison community and invite you to be a part of this work. We need your wisdom, talents, and creativity!
Interprofessional scholarship has been some of the most creative and fun work that I have been part of. There are exciting avenues to engage with interprofessional education at the national level. I share the national opportunities (below) as top-notch forums to learn, network, and disseminate your interprofessional work. Many of our UW-Madison colleagues involved in CIPE activities are presenting at NEXUS again this year! I look forward to seeing our presence at each of these forums grow over the next couple years.
- Midwest Interprofessional Practice, Education, and Research Center 15th Annual Conference will be held September 13 and 14 (virtually).
- NEXUS Summit will be held September 24, 25, 26, 30 and October 1(virtually).
- IPEC 2024 Poster Fair will be held November 21 (virtually).
- Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Forum will be held December 8-11 (hybrid).
- National Academies of Practice (NAP) Annual Meeting & Forum will be held March 14-15 in Washington DC.
I would love to meet you! I am eager to explore every unturned stone for new opportunities for interprofessional work at UW-Madison. Please contact me to see how we can brainstorm and partner on new ideas.
I look forward to meeting you soon.
