As part of a collaboration with the UW Doctor of Physical Therapy Program (DPT) LEAP Forward Internship Program, UW CIPE hosted two Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) high school students for one week. The DPT LEAP Program is part of the UW LEAP Forward Internship in which high school students participate in a 6-week campus experience focusing on the health sciences.
The two high school students, who spent 12 hours with the UW CIPE office over the course of Monday, July 22 to Thursday, July 25, 2024, were Dannika Debertin and Cameron Krohn. Both students attend Vel Phillips Memorial High School in Madison. Activities during the week included: an orientation to UW CIPE; a tour of the West campus health sciences buildings; an IPE activity where the students learned about healthcare team members’ roles and responsibilities; and in-depth tours of the UW SMPH Clinical Teaching and Assessment Center (CTAC), the UW SoN Center for Technology-Enhanced Nursing (CTEN), the Waisman Center, the UW School of Veterinary Medicine Building, and the new UW Veterinary Care building. We also hosted a lunch in honor of the LEAP interns and were joined by UW IPE leads in various programs and UW IPE PoD students. Additionally, students also participated in an IPE activity dissecting a clinical scenario and then discussing how teamwork impacts healthcare outcomes. The week was exciting, and we enjoyed our time with Dannika and Cameron. UW CIPE wishes to thank everyone who provided tours, participated in the luncheon, and the UW DPT program for the opportunity to collaborate.
