UW CIPE Holiday Message

The winter and holiday seasons are upon us, and we hope you and your family and friends are safe, warm, and in holiday spirits!

It has been another exceptional year for IPE at UW-Madison, and so much of our success is because of you. Thank you for your collaboration, partnership, passion, and expertise. It is our honor to work with you all in creating/advancing and delivering effective IPE educational opportunities for students, faculty, and facilitators, and we are so grateful for our relationship with you all.

This year has served as a year of navigation through a continually changing environment as restrictions due to COVID have shifted and we have even been able to host a few events in person in Fall 2022.  As the threat of COVID-19 to our day-to-day lives has relatively waned, we were able to achieve a number of IPE successes.  The fourth annual UW CIPE 2021-2022 Annual Report and our website at https://cipe.wisc.edu/ feature the significant developments and progress in interprofessional practice and education (IPE) at UW–Madison over the past year.

In efforts to achieve our 5-year Strategic Directions, we have supported and launched a number of IPE opportunities and initiatives as outlined in this update. Our recently released preliminary report of the UW IPE Systematic Assessment helps to outline and serve as a check-in of IPE learning as a whole on campus from the perspective of students.  While the 2021 UW IPE PoD Cohort are progressing well, this year we have welcomed 8 new cross-professional students who will be a part of the 2nd cohort of the UW IPE Path of Distinction Program Scholars.  This year, as a part of the IPE Healthy Aging Initiative, we were able to launch a fully virtual telehealth simulation experience, the Advanced Dementia Interprofessional Clinical Simulation Mini- Course (ADICS) with participation of 4 teams of interprofessional students (from Medicine, Occupational Therapy, Pre-Health [Nursing], and Social Work), 8 Standardized Patients in teams of 2, and 4 faculty facilitators.  In early 2023, and with the support from the WI DHS and the BOLD grant, we will have 6 teams of interprofessional students working together with caregivers of people living with dementia, Dementia Care Specialists, and the ADRC for the Interprofessional Practice Learning (IPL) Dementia Caregiving Badge opportunity which will begin in February 2023 and run through April 2023.  In 2022, and through the UW CIPE PD Advisory and Taskforce, we hosted two successful IPE Professional/Faculty Developments with a focus on IPE Facilitation and IPE Simulation. And finally, UW CIPE has continued with the planning and delivery of the IPE Knowledge Exchange Series, UW CIPE Competency Modules and the UW CIPE Badger Program, in which over 1,000 students have participated in the Competency Modules and over 550 students have received one or more IPE Badges.  We could not have done any of this great work without you, and we are so grateful for all of your time, energy, efforts, and dedication to IPE learning at UW–Madison.

In 2023, we look forward to even more collaboration, successes, and opportunities, specifically in the following two major areas.

  • UW IPE Experiential Expansion Initiative – The development of the UW IPE Experiential Expansion Initiative will continue with creating essential tools and measures for IPE Clinical and Community Experiences and begin piloting some new IPE Experiential opportunities.
  • IPE Environmental Scan – As we will be approaching the end of our first Strategic Directions (2019-2024), and begin planning for a new one, we will initiate an IPE environmental scan to hear from all of our program/school/clinical/community partners what their IPE needs are and gain insight in future planning.

Thank you for partnering and collaborating with us again this year!  We look forward to all that 2023 has to offer and our continued work in promoting and advancing IPE across campus.  From all of us at UW CIPE, we send our sincere appreciation and thank you for your help and support with IPE learning! Best wishes for the holidays!

Happy Holidays,

UW CIPE Team
