IPE Cases of Patients- Down syndrome took place on Monday, March 4, 2024 from 4:30-6:30 pm in the Health Sciences Learning Center (HSLC).
UW CIPE was invited to collaborate with Leah Kechele, DNP, School of Nursing, Kevin Wyne, MPAS, MSc, PA-C, Physician Assistant Program for this year’s offering of IPE Cases of Patients- Down syndrome. During this interprofessional learning opportunity, students were able to learn about the Waisman Center Down Syndrome Clinic and their comprehensive team-based approach to care, as well as hear the story of a mother who is committed to improving the world for her daughter.
During this event, 128 students from 1st-year Genetic Counseling, Nursing- ABSN, 2nd-year Physical Therapy, and Physician Assistant programs were in attendance, along with a student from both Medicine and Pharmacy.
Learning Objectives:
- Enhance learners understanding of Down syndrome including the needs of the patient and their families
- Discuss the unique needs of patients with Down syndrome, identifying potential strategies to address cognitive, developmental, emotional, behavioral, social and communication challenges
- Identify interprofessional approaches and community resources to assist and manage the care of patients with Down syndrome
